Positive News

26th October 2014 - By John Hicks

Well here I am again but thankfully unlike last week I have some very positive news.

Cow work takes a lot of time and resources

In order to increase the number of sterilizations we can do each month I have placed adverts for another Veterinary Doctor that specializes in sterilization. We have also advertised for a specialist cattle Veterinary Doctor due to the number of cattle we are now handling. These vets will be in addition to the vets we already have which will result in us having 6 full time Veterinary Doctors.

In the past we ran a very popular Out Patience Department. However there are now so many good private Veterinary Doctors in Goa we have decided not to reopen this facility which was initially closed because of our involvement with the Mission Rabies campaign to sterilize 70% of the dogs in Goa. The reason for the decision to not reopen this is in order that our precious resource, which is our veterinary doctors, can be used to sterilize and treat more ownerless animals.

Another lucky kitten finds a good home and goes to join another 3 previously adopted from the centre.

In order that we can find more and more homes for the all too many abandoned puppies and kittens we are stressing to everyone that all our adopted animals are not only free but come with a year's free veterinary treatment. These animals, along with animals that belong to people too poor to pay for veterinary care and street animals brought in for treatment by caring members of the public are generally the only animals that will still be treated at our centre. However, needless to say if an animal is brought in that is suffering or has a life threatening condition we will provide initial treatment to stop the suffering and to save the animals life but once this is achieved the owner will be given a list of private Veterinary Doctors to take the animal to.

As soon as we have the new Veterinary Doctor that specializes in sterilization we will be launching a campaign to stop animals being dumped in the various markets by offering free sterilization to owners with dogs and cats. The disgraceful dumping of animals in markets is a massive problem and sadly the vast majority of those dumped will suffer a slow miserable death. Can you imagine the fear and the terror that puppies and kittens endure being taken from their mothers and dumped in a terrifying busy market? What is more many of those dumped are so young they cannot even feed themselves. It amazes me that any so called civilized person can be so totally heartless and can simply close their minds to the suffering they are responsible for.

Reflecting on my previous blog thankfully the monkeys are all doing well despite of the injuries they inflicted on each other. However, I regret to report that despite all the effort we have put into finding the bull that was in such a bad way we have failed to find it. Probably the owner heard we were going to take it and so sent it off for slaughter.

The need to expand the work we do seems ever more pressing but we can only do this if we have the funds available. For the sake of the animals I beg you to try and make a small monthly donation or at least run a fund raising event. Donations can be by bank transfer with donations by Indian nationals to :
