Without the help of volunteers we would not be able to achieve the success and the standards we are so proud of. The constant demands on our time, resources and facilities far exceed our ability to cope and our staff are constantly stretched to the limit. Time and time again it is the volunteers who provide the help that permits our staff to deal with these demands. Thankfully our volunteers assist with just about every aspect of our work and without their dedication the amount of work we are able to do would be seriously compromised.
Because we take the Health and Safety of our volunteers seriously we have strict rules that are laid out in our Health and Safety Regulation which are on display at all times in our information centre. We also have a Volunteer Coordinator who provides each new volunteer with essential information and is there to help should the need arise.
We welcome drop-in volunteers at our centre.
If you are planning your trip in advance, please consult our volunteer guide book (PDF).
Volunteer activities for those with a current rabies vaccination.
The most important rule is that all volunteers handling animals must be vaccinated against rabies and they have to sign a form to say they are.
For exercise, stimulation and socialisation, we walk each of the dogs in the centre once a day. This is one of the best ways volunteers can contribute. Even walking one dog helps us out!
Playing with puppies
We always have several litters of puppies in the centre that appreciate some attention and play.
Bathing and de-ticking dogs
Many of the dogs arrive in a dirty, poor state and need bathing and de-ticking.
Playing with cats and kittens
Because of the high risk of infection, the public and volunteers are not given access to the Cat House. However, healthy cats and kittens are put in the large kitten pen for adoption. Volunteers are encouraged to spend time playing with them.
Qualified Veterinary surgeons and nurses
Please let us know if you are qualified to provide veterinary support. We always need more veterinary help!
Volunteer activities for those without a rabies vaccination
A rabies vaccination is required if you wish to work with animals, but there are still some tasks that can be done without you having been vaccinated.
Animal photography or videos
We can always use photos and videos of our animals for our online and printed publicity materials.
We run regular fund-raising events. Come along, help us out and join in the fun.
Help at the centre
We often have a variety of odd-jobs that volunteers can help with depending on our need at the time.
Getting a rabies vaccination
The initial vaccination for rabies is three injections on days 0, 7 and 21. You can start working with animals on day 14 (two weeks after the initial vaccination).
If you didn't get the vaccination in your home country, it can be done inexpensively in India (About 400Rs per injection).
